Pages from a diary.
The art of collage has a beginning and an end. In the beginning, one must break images, act as iconoclasts, with the spirit of the innocent or the alienated. In the end, one must construct a work from the pieces of the disaster, putting the utmost consciousness and perfection into the endeavour. Between the beginning and the end there is a knot. The knot is the 20th century, day by day. Collage is the art of the 20th century.
Inventory
That butterfly that drowned on Sunday,
that thread that had already been a knot,
those dice that were handed to the winner
along with the white hand of the loser,
that map that confused my grandfather
in his manly illustrated fantasy,
that necklace that never had rest,
those books that burned without flame,
when blessed be the door
that disproportionate collection of hours
along with its adolescent minutes,
those keys that no one promised,
those dazed shoes,
that open bottle,
that variety orchestra lectern,
that wheel far from its final destination,
those dawn scissors,
that damp copy of the complete poetry
of Jorge Luis Borges,
when blessed be the silence
that distant spa bill
that oriental game that favours the antithesis,
that chair that saw the definitive century,
that inverted fish tank,
that pair of gloves, one on top of the other,
a model of perfection,
when blessed be the farewell
there will still be something left of the order
with which yesterday we strove
to be someone.
