It’s not the same

It’s not the same to carve wood as to pierce stone.
It’s not the same to intervene on photographs as to open a furrow.
It’s not the same to burn paper as to dissolve ink in bleach.
It’s not the same to cut out magazines as to print lithographs.
It’s not the same to draw as to paint.

And yet.

The work of Pep Carrió is always the work
of Pep Carrió.
For a work to become identified
with its author, limitless variation is necessary.
There is only variation if there is repetition.
The order is important: first comes
variation; repetition is a logical consequence.
It’s not a play on words, it’s a game,
the game, plain and simple; it is the essence of the game and
the essence of a certain way of creating,
the one that defines the work of Pep Carrió.

It’s not the same to play as not to play.
