Contains live animals

Group exhibition by Jaime Compairé,

Galeria Blanca Berlin, Madrid 2012.

The box is tucked away in the corner of the workshop. It has a red label with black lettering that reads: ‘contains live animals.’ I open the box and find it filled with old, anonymous photographs, shipwrecked souls adrift that ended their journey in flea markets and auctions. Fragments of memory that tell us that ‘another time past was not better’, that tell us that those of us looking from this side are also already past. Incomplete, mutilated albums, the empty spaces of the photographs that are no longer there are as present as the enigmatic images that remain, for no one can tell us about them anymore. That woman in the hat, that serious-looking man, that child crying next to his sister, those friends in the snow… what are they laughing about? I close the box; it contains live animals.
